3D Laser Scan and Panoramic Tour of Tankardstown Mine

In September 2013, a comprehensive 3D laser scan and panoramic tour survey captured the historic Tankardstown mine buildings and underground workings.

Although entry to the underground areas is prohibited by law, the 3D tour provides a rare glimpse into the mine as it was last left in the 1870s.
The underground images remain largely unchanged, aside from visible secondary copper mineralization on the tunnel walls.

The surface buildings, however, suffered significant damage when the Cornish engines—used to power the pumps and lifting gear—were removed and sold in the late 19th century. Conservation efforts in the late 1990s restored the site, and the panoramic tour showcases these preserved structures. The tour is designed to automatically navigate through both surface and underground areas, but you can explore freely by right-clicking on the * symbols within the panorama.

This immersive 3D tour is based on 86 scans and includes 33 panoramic views of the surface works and 23 panoramas of the underground areas. Please be patient as the tour loads, as download times may vary based on your device and connection.

This 3D tour was developed through the Atlanterra project and co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the Atlantic Area Programme 2007-2013 Interreg 4B
