Our Story, So Far…

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

A UNESCO Global Geopark uses its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, to enhance awareness and understanding of key issues facing society in the context of the dynamic planet we all live on, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing the impact of natural disasters.

Copper Coast Geo Sites

The Copper Coast UNESCO Global Geopark is based around many different locations called “geosites” along the mid Waterford Coast and inland. Geosites either tell a part of the Geological story or combine the human with the geological to make combined heritage. Our Geosites tell the story of the different environments that created the bedrock of the Copper Coast, the Copper which formed within the rocks here and the story of peoples interaction with the landscape.

A Landscape Formed by Fire and Ice

The oldest rocks of the Copper Coast were formed 460 million years ago during the Ordovician period. At this time, the Copper Coast was part of a Continental margin, located under the sea near the South Pole.

As one continental plate slipped under another due to plate tectonics, magma rose from the depths of the earths mantle until it erupted in two separate volcano through the ocean floor where the Copper Coast was located.
